GLC, Love, Life & Loyalty

Biggest Surprise:
R. Kelly’s, Love Letter

Biggest Disappointments:
1. Nicki Minaj, Pink Friday (Her Barbie In Wonderland mixtape is better)
2. Black Milk, Album of the Year (an album that’s not as good as last year’s Tronic and bares the title AOY)
3. Murs x 9th Wonder, Fornever (9th Wonder creates fantastic album-scapes and these two made a classic underground hip-hop record years ago… the magic is nowhere to be found on this one)
4. Sage Francis, Li(f)e (the rest of the album doesn’t achieve the same combination of sincerity, depth and heart-stirring production as the lead single “Best of Times” would suggest)

Best Music Video:
1. Kanye West, “Power” (leave it to Kanye to take epic to an EPIC level)
2. Duck Sauce, “Barbara Streisand” (if only for sheer amount of cameo appearances… but infectiously fun)
3. Black Keys, “Tighten Up” (cutest… video… ever)

4. Yelawolf, “I Wish (remix)” (a no-nonsense, cold-as-steel music video for an equally bad-ass track)

5. King Fantastic, “Why? Where? What?” (a wonderful juxtaposition of southern-California lavishness (mansion on the Hollywood hills and a porn star) with grimey gangsta raps)

Why? Where? What? from King Fantastic on Vimeo.

6. The Like, “June Gloom”

7. New Politics, “Yeah Yeah Yeah”

ASTW Presents: Four In The Wild Ruby Kato Attwood Sparrow from A Story Told Well on Vimeo.

5. New York Minute Mini-Series promo

Best Live Show:
1. Yelawolf at Soundset (still spits every verse, every syllable perfectly clear with a staccato flow while getting mobbed by women)
2. Hypnotic Brass Ensemble at First Ave for the Soundset Afterparty (plane arrived 30 min before the show)
3. Kid Koala at The Cedar (4 turntables, all vinyl is more amazing than it sounds when done live)
4. The xx at Varsity (the perfect venue for some shoe-gaze/make-out music)
5. Any Out of the Box Tuesday at the Nomad (local celebrities and 300+ guests/week agree)

Best Comeback:
1. Kanye West (not a better ‘F-you’ than putting out the year’s best album and selling nearly 500k first week)
2. Eminem (while Relapse sounded like he was still recovering, Recovery finds Em back on his MC throne)
3. R. Kelly (who would’ve thought that a child-molester could make the best love album of the year?)
4. Gil Scott-Heron (after struggling with drugs and imprisoned, a long-time fan reaches out and helps him create a decidingly modern album that still retains Gil Scott-Heron’s vintage style)

Best New Band:
Sleigh Bells (single-handedly created their own genre and do it well)
Hundred in the Hands (runner-up)

Best New Artist:
Nicki Minaj (the most talented MC and marketable artist since... ever)
Yelawolf (runner-up) (one foot in the country, street-cred, killer flow and the ladies love him)

Best New MC:
1. Nicki Minaj
2. Yelawolf
3. Nitti Scott

Tragedies:

Best Meet n Greet:
Zakk Wylde of Black Label Society (stories of debauchery for days)

Best New Minneapolis Venue:
Honey Lounge in Nordeast

Best DJ Experience:
DJ’ing for the legendary Keith Murray at the Nomad

Worst DJ Experience:
The Dog House (and probably anywhere else in Chaska/Downtown Carver where ignorant people with no tact reside)

Fashawn, "Bart Simpson" video + Grizzly City 3 mixtape

Fashawn had a startling good debut album last year called "Boy Meets World" (entirely produced by Exile). I became a fan after watching the "Sunny CA" music video. I became a believer after listening to his full length. He then became a problem after commanding the stage at Soundset like a vet in the game. Be on the lookout for this kid. In the meantime, grab his album after sampling from the mixtape.

Gangrene, "The Sickness"

From the limited "Sawblade" 12" that features 4 tracks that won't be on the upcoming "Gutter Water" full length. I can't think of any better visual representation for what happens when ALC and Oh No get it in. Filthy!

Spok, Mathambo, "Mshini Wam"

SPOEK MATHAMBO – MSHINI WAM from spoek mathambo on Vimeo.

From one of my favorite albums this year, Mshini Wam, this is the title track and it goes hard as a spliffed-out Rasta! This album is what the new M.I.A. album should've sounded like. It crosses all dance genres from dubstep to dancehall to juke and b'more. Every track is wholly different from anything else on the album. The only thing it all has in common is its unabashed ethnic roots. The album drops August 30th on the always-fantastic BBE record label.

Skyzoo, "Frisbees"

From the forthcoming Live From The Tape Deck entirely produced by !llmind out 10/5.

Press release:

Skyzoo & !llmind Set to Release 'Live From The Tape Deck' on October 5th

Features in place from Sean Price & Rock of Heltah Skeltah, Styles P, Buckshot, Rhymefest & Torae

A little after one year since releasing 'The Salvation,' Skyzoo returns with a new album entitled 'Live From The Tape Deck,' entirely produced by !llmind. Skyzoo, of Brooklyn, NY, has spent the last year promoting & touring off 'The Salvation,' completing separate nationwide tours with Ghostface Killah & Raekwon. His music has been featured in ESPN programming and most recently in an episode from the current season of Entourage.

'Live From The Tape Deck' is the perfect follow-up record for Skyzoo fans who are anxious for new material. Skyzoo says his goal while recording the album was " to make something that felt like a 2010 cassette tape. I wanted the content to be raw and lyric driven as always, but not as story driven or emotional as 'The Salvation'

was. There are still parts of the album that are stories and concepts, but not as much as my debut had. This one was more of a beats and rhymes type of album."

!llmind brings true validity as the sole producer for the album and helps provide a consistent sound throughout the project. !llmind is a sought after producer who has upcoming beat placements in albums such as Jared Evan (Interscope/Zone 4), Redman (Def Jam), Drunken Tiger & Yoonmirae (two multi-platinum artists from Korea) and more. !llmind is also being used in a publicity campaign by Akademiks where his photos will be placed in print ads across major Entertainment publications.

!llmind took a custom approach to the production for the album based on the concept of "Live From The Tape Deck," explaining that he "wanted to keep the soundscape warm and 'analog' sounding, just like how 2 inch tapes used to sound. Most of the keyboard and synth sounds I used were from analog synths made in the late 80's. Combined this with using my ASR-10, I was able to capture that feeling, but with a slightly updated feel. I think our debut record, 'Frisbees' was a cool way, sonically, to introduce the sound I was going for."

Skyzoo & !llmind secured features from artists that matched the 'Live From The Tape Deck' concept. Skyzoo goes further saying, "I went to who I felt made sense for the records I put them on. For instance, when fans hear the track, "the burn notice", they'll agree that the beat, being chaotic and loud, had Heltah Skeltah written all over it."

Nosaj Thing, "Coat of Arms"

I can't believe it's taken me this long to post something about Nosaj Thing. He opened for the XX at the Varsity Theater back in April with a unique blend of head-nodding, downtempo, stuttering breakbeats and some danceable glitch-y electronica. His range and style are very reminiscent of Minnehappiness-born Mux Mool, now in Brooklyn repping Ghostly.

This video captures the track and style perfectly from the brooding subject matter, the gray palette, the quick edits, the ghostly layers and a hint of the future. Shot and edited by Roland Von Tessin.

Pay Dues vol. 2

As much as I love the opportunities that DJ'ing with digital software like Serato provides, NOTHING is as rewarding as DJ'ing with vinyl. Whether it's at home or at a gig, I play vinyl as much as I can. Sadly, most people don't hear me play from my vinyl collection. Nowadays, party-goers expect a wide variety of the latest music and I'm forced to play music via my computer at peak hour. Of course I can't share the sound quality of vinyl via the internet, but I can share a live mix I recorded with all vinyl. If you like what you hear, get to the Nomad early on Tuesdays for Out of the Box and catch me playing sweet sweet wax.

More Wale coming Aug 3rd

New Heat from the Dirty South

Wow, a track featuring Drake doing his half-assed singing and rapping that I still like? There's a first for everything. It speaks more to Bun B's trillness than anything. Off of his new album that drops next Tuesday.

Big K.R.I.T. is nice but gawd-DAMN Yelawolf kills yet another feature!

Thankfully Swizz Beatz keeps the rapping to a minimum and provides a trademark club heater for Busta Bust.
