The riding is dope but what I really want to know is what the track is... holler if you know.

Mayer Hawthorne, "Your Easy Lovin'..." on Jimmy Kimmel

Copyright Criminals

PBS just posted Independent Films' Copyright Criminals available to stream here. This is really well done. They try, fairly sincerely, to show both sides of the argument and struggle. Although, in the end, it's definitely coming from a pro-sampling mentality. The icing on the cake are all of the quality underground and mainstream guests that they were able to get to share their opinions. Plus, any film that uses El-P instrumentals in the background gets two thumbs up from me.

The Jazz Files

From the collective that brought you Suff Daddy (check out his Suff Draft), MPM brings you the next installment in the new beatsmith movement. Dexter incorporates some of the dusty jazz-sampling techniques of DJ Premier and Madlib but with a little je ne sais quoi that firmly places the production in the present tense.

Kid Koala and Plain Ole Bill - Cedar Cultural Center 1/30

Turntablism isn't dead! Kid Koala, your mother's favorite DJ, has been pushing the limits of the turntable as an instrument for many years now. He will be getting funky on two Techs at the Cedar Cultural Center on January 30th. Our very own turntablist, Plain Ole Bill, will also be featured. I'm still unsure whether Bill will be collaborating with Kid Koala or if he'll have his own opening set. I'll keep you posted if I hear anything. Don't miss this. If Minneapolis can't pack the Cedar for Kid Koala (tix here), then Technics might as well stop making the 1200... oh, wait. DAMN!

Yelawolf, "Pop The Trunk"

Dayum! Shit goes hard. I'm not setting foot in 'Bama after watching this! This video is on some Onyx meets Eminem down in the rural south.

Death Proof's lapdance scene

I was just discussing Tarantino films last night and this scene came up. Tarantino utilizes music better than any other director I know. And his choice of the Coasters' "Down In Mexico" is one of his best examples. It fits the locale, tension, and on-screen action perfectly. It doesn't hurt that Vanessa Ferlito friggin KILLS the scene. OooooWEE! (jump to 4:28)

P.O.S., "Yeah Right"

Doomtree just uploaded P.O.S' video for "Yeah Right" from Audition. Old song, but I don't know if the video has been released until now (?). Either way, it's an excellent song from my favorite P.O.S. album. And the video perfectly capture the energy and content of the song.

Maestro Knows --> 9th Wonder

I've been following Maestro for a while now and am a big fan for one reason: his honest portrayals of some of the biggest influences in the music, art, and urban world to date. I always get inspiration from watching his work.

Support Conan, Haiti and dope art all at once

Alex Pardee created a drawing last week during all of the Conan/Leno business to show his colors. The drawing, inspired by "The Ripper" art by VCJ, was done as a lark. But after hearing about the devastation in Haiti, he decided to print up the drawing on poster stock and tee-shirts and utilize the revenue to put towards Haiti relief. This is a no-brainer, folks. Buy them for aesthetics, buy them for Alex Pardee, buy them for Conan, buy them for pop culture, or buy them to help a worthy cause.

Copyright Criminals

I DO care what side you're on. All culture and, hence, music was built upon what came before it. It's a natural progression and scientific evolution. If you don't understand that... FUCKOUTTAHERE!

Mayer Hawthorne: Dusty Fingers

You already know that I'm a fan of Mayer Hawthorne. Everything from his music, talent, style, record label and to the way he carries himself is so real. Now we get a glimpse into his record-collecting side. I'm in love.

Real talk: "Getting addicted to record digging is just as bad as any other drug out there. It's a little healthier for you but... it's not healthy for your wallet, though!"

OC & AG collabo, Oasis

A brief look into the OC & AG (of DITC) in-store at Fat Beats NYC promoting their new album Oasis, out now. And if you haven't realized how humble and how much of a hip-hop head Premier is, now you know. Dude is straight blowing on his CD after AG signs it! You gotta respect that kind of love.

Compilation of that new-new

aboveGround Magazine put together an excellent compilation of the most recent hip-hop tracks to grace the blogosphere. Solid all around except for that Kid Cudi... if ANYbody can explain to me what his appeal is, my ears are open. Until then, FUCKOUTTAHEAR!

New Year, Nu Funk

Dam-Funk continues to be oh-so-kind to the funk populous. If you're diggin' this continued heat in these frigid times, cop the real fire and pay it back! And if you're not feelin' it... FUCKOUTTAHEAR!

Hot Chip, "One Life Stand"

Hot Chip continues their knack to produce unabashedly irresistible pop music. Their fourth studio album by the same name, One Life Stand, is the first album of 2010 that I'm anxious for. The expected release is February 1st.
