It was a slow night and Tommy and I were getting a little frustrated hopping genres and intensities to get some kind of reaction. It turned out that the few cats listening were huge hip-hop heads. We scrapped our loose theme for the night and ended up mixing dope underground hip-hop for the rest of the night. Normally a slow night without getting people to dance can get us down. But what made the night were the handful of heads that let us know that they were digging what we were doing. Much love to Lewis for chatting us up and spreading some hip-hop love. Totally made the night. As thanks, here's a rip from my prized Lords of the Underground LP that I copped in NYC last summer. And hit your boy up if you know some peeps who want to throw a house-party/block-party or you just want to plug in some speakers to some street lights. ONE!

The Audible Doctor, "Crackers EP Vol. 1"
The Audible Doctor, part of the Fat Beats hip-hop supergroup Brown Bag Allstars, has blessed the hip-hop community with a freEP. Judging from the title, it sounds like there's more heat to come! While you're at it, you definitely need to check out his Brownies album. If you thought that you've heard James Brown flipped every way imaginable... think again. In the field of instrumental albums it's in the same league as Donuts, f'real.

Ruby Kato Attwood, "Sparrow" from the Four In The Wild project
Really cool concept from A Story Told Well that works incredibly well in practice. An artist is recorded in 4 different environments with audio and video. Each environment's recording is set as a track. The final piece is audio and video mixed using these 4 tracks without any after-effects. There are other examples from this project, but this one is particularly beautiful.

No Bird Sing, Lookbook and Kill The Vultures @ The Cedar 2/27
This show will have a little something for everyone. Kill The Vultures brings dark, introspective lyricism that drips like molasses off of Anatomy's off-kilter, bass-laden beats. Lookbook provides indie pop drama disguised in up-tempo drum loops made from 80's kits all set on fire by Maggie Morrison's ethereal vocals. No Bird Sing crosses abstract raps while reincarnating Minneap emo-rap forefathers, Oddjobs.
Put your intellect, dance shoes and whiskey all to use at one show.

Erykah Badu - Jump Up In The Air (Stay There) feat. Lil Wayne
It seems like f-o-r-e-v-e-r ago that Erykah Badu dropped New Amerykah Part One. It was only two years ago, but music like hers is like a drug. Once you get a taste, you need it constantly. Oh, and I am in need of a hit sooooo bad. Cop your fix on March 30th.

Live From the Kitchen Counter - 2/14 edition
Special thanks to all who attended and gave props at Shamrocks last night. Not gonna lie, that place can be frustrating to DJ for. The Streets, "Could Well Be In"
*Disclaimer: no, this dude can't rap. He has no flow and, in fact, his vocal presence borders on monotone talking. He can't sing either... and yet he does... worse than Kanye. All that being said, his album Original Pirate Material is excellent. Don't ask me why. It's not rational. But neither is good music, right?
Totally in the mood for this song.
"I saw this thing on my TV the other week. Said that if she played with her hair she's probably keen. She's playing with her hair well regularly so I reckon I could well be in."

Groove Armada, "Paper Romance"

Broken Bells
BROKEN BELLS, "THE HIGH ROAD" from EJ on Vimeo.
Broken Bells is a collaboration between James Mercer, lead singer of The Shins, and Danger Mouse. Both artists have been incredibly successful and made a lot of fantastic music with their primary endeavors. If you follow Danger Mouse's projects, you will know how selective he is and how fulfilling each experiment turns out. He seems to get the most out of his subject matter, whether it be Cee-Lo, Jemini, the Beatles and now James Mercer. I have complete confidence that this first single is a perfect barometer for how wonderful this album will be. Be on the lookout for it March 9th.Friday, February 5, 2010

Ghostly Gift of Mux
If you've followed this blog for more than two months and haven't been to iTunes yet to purchase any of Mux Mool's electronic crunch of headnodic beats, SHAME ON YOU! The only reason you wouldn't already have his music is because you haven't heard it enough. Today I'm closing this gap for you. Because today I received a Ghostly International newsletter with a FreEP of past Mux Mool beats. Enjoy, but don't forget to support this homegrown beatsmith. His first official full-length, Skulltaste, drops March 23rd. You can preview some tasty morsels here.

El Truco Del Manco
This past August, I was blessed with the opportunity to spend a month is Sevilla, Spain. One thing that I really took home with me was the appreciation they had for culture. I've never been anywhere that embraces who they are more than they do in Spain. During my time there, they held many outdoor cinemas that showed all kinds of films. One of these was an independent flick featuring a Spanish rapper named "El Langui". If you can get your hands on a copy of this, don't pass it up. Trust me!
