Hold The Form (DJ B-Rock blend) by DJ B-Rock

I'm still getting the hang of Ableton, but here is my first official blend utilizing Lookbook's "True To Form" with Major Lazer's "Hold The Line" featuring Santigold. Enjoy!

Pete Rock on his production throughout the years.

As one of the cornerstones of hip-hop production and DJing, Pete Rock has set an example for over two decades for fans, beat makers, and DJ's. Vibe sits down with Pete as he breaks down pretty much everything he's done until now over the years. It's a good look into where his music came from and how it shaped the following years.

Gil Scott-Heron x Jamie xx

Gil Scott-Heron made one of my favorite albums of 2010 after not having released a studio album for 16 years and doing a stint in jail. The xx made my absolute favorite album in the last 3 years and single-handedly created a new genre with their debut album that has managed to not only receive critical accolades but also achieve commercial success. Regardless of my shared appreciation for both albums, it just so happens they also both share very similar musical aesthetics: minimal instrumentation with a focus on the drum machine and simple, looped melodies. The fact that these two would join forces to make an album makes as much sense as peanut butter and jelly...

...but the story goes further. It just so happens that Gil Scott-Heron's revival is largely due to Richard Russell's (XL label owner) long-time interest in Gil Scott's music. Richard had visited him while he was in jail and interviewed him upon his release. It should be no surprise, then, that Richard would see the inevitable pairing of his musical hero with his label's most recent success, the xx.

This is my most highly anticipated album of the year, even before Kanye and Jay-Z's collaboration. Watch for it February 22nd.

Here's a taste of peanut butter and jelly proportions...

Adam Tensta, "Like A Punk" music video

What a track and a near-perfect video! My only complaint... two dudes wearing plaid pants, really? Not so punk, but then again, what do I know?

The Tribe & Big Cats, "Breakin Down The Walls" music video

Local rapper Chris Hooks gets it in on this track and the video pays homage to how hip-hop videos used to be done. If you're looking to get down Chris does every Tuesday, you know you need to be at OTB Tuesdays at the Nomad. Tonight!

Hidden Gem: Jay-Z, "Can't Get With That"

A B-side track from the "In My Lifetime" 12" that features a young Jay-Z before dropping his first and classic album Reasonable Doubt.

Props to Crate Kings for turning me onto this. I felt this deserved another posting in my blog. Dude's not only nice on the pads, but also can rock out on the drums. From what I've come across, this is rare for an MPC/producer to be this nice on classic instruments.
