Beastie Boys x Roy Parker Jr. - Intergalactic Ghostbusters (B-Rock blend)

Beastie Boys x Roy Parker Jr. - Intergalactic Ghostbusters (B-Rock blend) by DJ B-Rock

I have this guilty pleasure for the Ghostbusters theme song. Despite the cheese-y lyrical content, the instrumental is booty-shaking! I was overconfident and played the song at the club over the weekend. But instead of playing it through I had looped the beginning and dropped Beastie Boys' "Intergalactic" acapella over it. It went over quite well. So I had to make it official. Enjoy!

Neon Hitch

Neon Hitch - Drop It Like Its Hot (Snoop Dogg vs. Alina Orlova) by Neon Hitch

This girl has some intense musical range. She has songs as lighthearted, sugary sweet and pop-y as Nelly Furtado, she's got cajones like Jessie J, can bust out a Snoop Dogg flow, maintains an indie sensibility and is even at home on European club anthems. What's the biggest accomplishment is that she can swing from genre to genre while maintaining a sound that's distinctly her own. I'm anxious to see what is yet to come from her!

You Need These Mixtapes

The first is from up-and-coming Brooklyn female emcee, Nitty Scott, whom you heard out from me back in November. The second is from a Detroit legend and all of his friends who are all finally getting the look they deserve after being signed to Shady Records earlier this year. Both mixtapes are better than the majority of the hip-hop records that have come out this year. And both are free and both are nearly free of annoying DJ drops.

Complex's Top 25 Rhymesayers Songs w/Slug

Slug provides color for Complex's Top 25 Rhymesayers tracks

#1: Atmosphere, "Always Coming Back Home To You"

Slug: “I hope these songs aren’t in any sort of numerical order because there’s no fucking way that this is the best song we ever did. This was one of the first times we used an instrument at the center instead of a sample. It was the first song our guitarist Nate was on. That’s why I don’t get why people have such an issue with us using so many live instruments and having a band now because, going back to here, we’ve had musicians for a long time.

"I wrote it as an exercise about a walk from the 43rd and Chicago Walgreen’s to 26th and Garfield to make something as visual as possible. Every few bars I tried to introduce a new rap cliche: a robbery, flirting with a girl, a hood runs up, stealing cars, but I wanted a twist in the ending for each one. We made it during God Loves Ugly, but then put it on the back-burner.

"I forgot about it, but when it came time to do Seven’s Travels, Ant said, “You know, we still have this song...” He liked it. I never had much faith in it. It’s not a very well-written song. We never had a video for it although I would have loved to make visuals. But you have to let listeners’ interpretations have their own life and that’s why I think people get so much from this song.”

Lykke Li, "Sadness Is A Blessing"

Lykke Li - Sadness is a Blessing (Director Tarik Saleh) from Lykke Li on Vimeo.

An absolutely fantastic video as ornate and troubled as Lykke Li's stellar sophomore album, Wounded Rhymes, one of my favorites of the year.

Shabazz Palaces, "Blastit" music video

Shabazz Palaces - Blast It (from the Village Beat film, Tough Bond) from Sub Pop Records on Vimeo.

Some visuals to go along with one of my favorite new artists, Shabazz Palaces (previous post with track streams here). His debut is out May 31st.

From the label, Sub Pop:

“This video contains footage from the upcoming documentary by Village Beat titledTough Bond — a film about kids sniffing glue to survive street life in Kenya’s disappearing villages and exploding urban slums.

Original documentary score was provided by Shabazz Palaces.
