DJ B-Rock's Entertainment Guide

TUESDAY
Double your booze money at the Triple Rock at this weekly DJ night. 2-4-1's go until 12:30.
WEDNESDAY
The Noisettes, a cross between the neo-soul of Amy Winehouse and the uptempo retro instrumentation of The Dap Kings, are playing a FREE 18+ show at the beautiful Varsity Theatre. Get there early. Doors are at 7:30.
THURSDAY
It's the weekly all-vinyl hip-hop night at the Spring Street Tavern. DJ Trey and myself will be spinning underground hip-hop morsels to put some meat on your bones after surviving off of the anemic quality of radio rap. It goes from 10 until 2. And if people are getting down, we'll bust out those LAVA-BANGERS!
FRIDAY
The once-a-month brainchild of DJ extraordinaire, Jimmy2Times, is back this Friday! GET CRYPHY! Be sure to get hydrated, have a good meal, drink some herbal tea, take your vitamins, and get overall healthy before this night. Because you will be DESTROYED afterwards. Duck and cover when Fundo, Jimmy, Tactic and B-Stee... droppin' bombs! Don't say I didn't warn you.

The weekend agenda (updated Friday, 6/5!)

It's the first Friday of the month which can only mean that it's Get Cryphy time!  The First Ave V.I.P room will yet again be a DJ short as Plain Ole Bill hopped back on tour with P.O.S for the summer after stopping home to throw down some slick vinyl mixing with JimmyJimmy last weekend.  I hope you didn't sleep on that special occasion because it was colder than a polar bears' toenails.  Bill will be missed, but Jimmy 2 Times, Fundo and So Gold are more than up for the task of taking Minneapolis' premier party-goers on a Cryphilicious dancing expedition.  And don't worry about the hypeman, either.  Yea, nobody really gets down like Prof after a few PBRs, but Felix of Heiruspecs is a monster on the mic and I am definitely looking forward to seeing him in a club atmosphere.  Prof is also currently on tour.
Before you hit the sack on Friday night/Saturday morning, be sure to prepare some coke lines right where you rest your head.  That way when the alarm goes off at 8:30, you'll be ready for a morning of record shopping.  The VFW is hosting another record show on Lyndale.  Bring cash!  It's 2 bucks to enter and everything else depends on your taste and haggling skills.
After hours hunched over crates, I'd recommend grabbing an awesome omelet at the Uptown Diner.  Then take a nap and put your learning cap on and get ready to be schooled.  For those fortunate enough to pick up the free tickets (sorry guys, all sold out now - my bad for not posting it earlier!), McNally Smith  is putting on their Hip-Hop Diploma Kickoff Event.  There will be many great performers like Toki Wright, Doomtree, and Big Quarters.  The headline of the show is Davey D who will be speaking on everything hip-hop.  This all goes down at the McNally Smith/History Theater in St. Paul.  If you don't have a ticket, swing by.  Who knows, if I end up blowing a load on records in the morning I might need to be scrimping for some cash.
Dang!  I almost forgot!  The man, the myth, the Ableton BEAST, Mux Mool is coming back home briefly and will be at the Uptown Bar Saturday night.  It wouldn't surprise me if some of the local emcees that he's collaborated with in the past show up and do a little ditty.  Don't miss this!
And another one!  I'm going to be torn this Saturday evening as both Mux Mool and my favorite Twin City band, Black Blondie, will be playing at the same time.  You can catch Black Blondie at the new 501 Bar off Washington.

Get Cryphy April 3rd in pictures

I couldn't get to this yesterday because I was hungover like a mofo. I blame Fundo who opened up the floodgates to the dance floor earlier than normal. His mixing was on some next level type ish. Straight merked it!

Get Cryphy 14 in pictures

You know the drill.  It's the day after another successful Get Cryphy.  The crowd continues to become more diverse as this party evolves.  It was great to see all lifestyles and ethnicities represented.

The guest DJ of the night was So Gold who really got the crowd heated with a blend that I've never heard before.  I'm going to assume it's his own special blend.  He dropped the instrumental of Justin Timberlake's "My Love" which got the girls going, and then brought in the vocals of "Thuggish Ruggish Bone" for all the fellas (and weed smokers).  It worked so well.

I also must give a shout out to the local, independent retailer of cool ish, Phenom, for giving away cool schwag.  Items included shirts, stickers, caps and even a skateboard!  Bill tossed wooden projectile into the crowd midway through the night.  I can't believe nobody got hurt.  A lot of people ended up leaving with some good stuff.  I'm still trying to convince my girl to let me rock the stocking cap she nabbed.  I can't complain though, because I caught a solid long sleeve.  Props to Phenom.

Happy Post-Cryphy Day!

Aw, man. What can I say? As Jimmy2Times posted this morning, the one year anniversary of Get Cryphy was "unfuckwithable"! Everyone was on their game. Prof engaged the crowd and even performed part of "Rocket Man". And of course all the DJ's brought it: Billy Ray Serious, Mike the 2600 King, Fundamentalist, and Jimmy2Times. And the crowd reacted accordingly by rocking so hard that the sound system was at its limits as the speakers bottomed out and distorted a couple of times. Oh, what a crowd. By about midnight it was announced that the show SOLD OUT!!! I can testify to this fact as I was waiting to meet my lady by the door and witnessed many people getting turned away due to maximum capacity.

What made this night extra-special wasn't the size of the crowd, but the beautiful people who came out and how they partied. Throughout the night I saw and heard things that would make Jimmy and Bill proud. As people passed through the crowd there were countless greetings, pleasantries, old friends catching up, new friends bonding, identical head-nodding to the music, dudes letting other dudes go through the single-person gap and all smiling faces. You don't see a lot this if you go out dancing to many other parties, especially in Minneapolis.

The Cameos
Another part of what made the crowd so special were some of the specific people who either just came for the support or were there just like everybody else, to have a great time. The Minneapolis quasi-celebrities that I saw throughout the night were:

Jordon Daley (God bless the Fifth Element), ANT, Last Word, TenderCakes, MillionsBillions and Jimmy's girlfriend who came in all of the way from NY.

Visuals
My camera phone could not do the crowd justice, but here's a taste...

The Morning After

It's a beautiful Minnehappiness day.  It helps when you ease into it with this...

"Do you have any plans for the weekend?"

Ugh.  If you work in corporate America, you hear this every Friday and you dread the inevitable exchange.  Hopefully if you're reading this blog you have many interests that you pursue and participate in over the weekend.  You always have something sweet to look forward to.  Sadly, most co-workers' things worth mentioning about their weekend are watching TV, a movie, or going out to dinner.  I sure hope I never have such a lame answer.  If you're worried that you may have such an answer, fear not!  This is what you're doing...

You're getting buck with some of the best DJ's in Minnehappiness.  The only rule... there are no rules.  They'll be playing anything and everything so long as gets bodies moving, frothing, writhing, hooting, hollering, exposing, drinking, jumping, banging and flailing with a side of dancing.  Unfortunately, co-founder Plain Ole Bill is repping Minneap hard along with P.O.S on the "Never Better" tour.  Fear not because Jimmy 2 Times, Mike the 2600 King and Fundamentalist are all party scientists that know exactly how to turn oxygen, water molecules, weed smoke and spilt beer into a nucking futs atmosphere.  Be there or live an unfulfilled life!

It might go a little something like...

with a splash of...

and a healthy dose of  "FUCK YEAH!"s
